5/20/2023 0 Comments Joe cross weight loss chart![]() Three-technique DT: Trill Carter, year 5 // Deven Eastern, year 3 OR Darnell Jefferies, year 6 The thing I'll be watching most with Jah, JLR, and Striggow though is how big is the step forward from year one of consistent playing time to year two in 2023. He's a grown man in year six of a collegiate weight program that displayed flashes at times as a Tar Heel. ![]() They believe in Striggow and that North Carolina graduate transfer Chris Collins can give them something. I know some fans want to move over Joyner, and I've heard zero steam about that from sources. An injury against Nebraska stole some thunder on what was a promising first season for him, but there are expectations for Striggow internally to take a step forward this fall. I'd argue that the former state champion wrestler was better on his reps this past fall than Rush, but now going into year four, he'll have his opportunity to prove that he can handle 400 snaps this fall. Without Thomas Rush, it will be a significant opportunity for Orono's Danny Striggow. I'd prefer not to play a ton of second-year defensive linemen in the Big Ten, but know that there are lofty expectations for this young man. I don't know how many reps he'll get at five-technique this fall unless an injury occurs, but there's been a lot of talk about his "potential" behind the scenes. There's still upside here, but if he's going to remain on the field after first and second down, he's got to work on his arsenal of pass-rushing moves. He wins with power, while his rotating partner wins with bend and twitch. He's a better run defender than Joyner, but he doesn't have Jah's twitch. Again, it's almost like the more reps that young players get, the better and more comfortable they become. His four highest PFF grades were from the season's final five games. In his first year receiving a copious amount of snaps, just like with Jah, he was much more consistent in the second half of the season than the first half. While Joyner led the team in pressures, hurries, and sacks, the guy who was third in pressures and hurries was Jalen Logan-Redding. Get that to stay on consistently for 13 games next season because if Joyner does, he could be the best pass-rusher for Minnesota in the Fleck era. The light bulb was on and stayed on, which'll be one of the most essential to-do items for new defensive line coach Winston DeLattiboudere. He amassed 19 pressures and 13 hurries, both led the team. He was the Spring Game MVP, but after just 13 pressures in his first eight games of 2022, Joyner found something in the last five games of the season. ![]() For a reason, he was a four-star on 247Sports, but we've started to see the flashes become more and more consistent throughout the last 18 months. Jah Joyner has always had the tools since he signed with the Golden Gophers. On the flip side, Rush led all defensive linemen with 557 snaps last season, so at least one spot, there will be some snaps up for grabs. Thomas Rush graduates after being second on the team in the pressures and hurries this past season, and depth defensive end Lorenza Surgers elected to hit the portal for his final year of eligibility, but he only had 53 snaps last season. But Minnesota's defensive line has to improve this off-season on their pass rush. Here are my thoughts with actual practices starting next week. With Minnesota coming off a nine win season in 2022, expectations are going to be raised in large part due to an offense that added some key impact players via the portal.
